FAQs

General Psilocybin Questions

What is psilocybin, and how does it work?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in certain mushrooms. Psilocybin is metabolized in the body to produce psilocin, which is the primary psychoactive compound responsible for the hallucinogenic effects.  When ingested, psilocybin interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, particularly the 5-HT2A receptor, leading to alterations in perception, mood, and cognition.

The effects of psilocybin can vary widely depending on factors such as dosage, individual physiology, and the user’s mindset and environment. Common effects may include visual and auditory hallucinations, changes in thought patterns, altered sense of time, and feelings of euphoria or spiritual insight. In a supportive, facilitated environment, it can help interrupt negative thought patterns, promote emotional healing, and increase self-awareness.

Is psilocybin therapy legal in Oregon?

Yes. Oregon’s Measure 109 allows licensed centers like Unstuck to facilitate psilocybin experiences for adults 21 and older, under strict state regulation. Read more about Oregon’s legal model: Oregon Psilocybin Services

What’s the difference between psilocybin facilitation and a psychedelic retreat?

Retreats may not be regulated or legal, and may be conducted in large group settings. Unstuck provides clinical-level safety, privacy, and professionalism in a one-on-one or small group setting.

How is Unstuck different from other service centers or retreats?

We specialize in completely private, professionally guided sessions in a serene and confidential environment with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many of us hold additional professional healthcare licenses.

Do I need a prescription or diagnosis to participate?

No. You don’t need a diagnosis or prescription. Any adult over 21 can access services after a screening and preparation process.

Duration & Detection

How long does psilocybin stay in the body?

Psilocybin is rapidly metabolized into psilocin, which produces the psychedelic effects. The body clears psilocin within 24 hours in most cases. For nearly all individuals, psilocybin is undetectable in standard biological tests after 1–3 days.

  • Duration of Effects: Typically 4 to 6 hours.
  • Metabolism & Elimination: Most psilocin is processed and eliminated within 24 hours.
  • Complete Clearance: For the vast majority of individuals, psilocybin metabolites are undetectable after 1 to 3 days, especially in blood or urine.

However, this can vary slightly based on factors like body weight, hydration, and metabolic rate.

Will it show up on a drug test?

Not typically. Standard drug tests — including 5-panel and 10-panel screens — do not test for psilocybin or psilocin. Detection requires a specialized test rarely used outside forensic or academic settings. In short, participation in a legal session at Unstuck is extremely unlikely to affect a routine employment drug test, though cannot be completely guaranteed.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Will my participation be kept private?

Absolutely. We maintain strict confidentiality and never share client info without written and signed permission.

What information do you collect, and how is it stored?

We only collect what’s needed for care and compliance. Records are stored securely in encrypted systems.

Will my employer or insurance know I came here?

No. We are an out-of-pocket service and do not report to insurers or employers.

Safety & Screening

Is psilocybin therapy safe?

When used under supervision, psilocybin is considered safe for most people. Our protocols follow Oregon Health Authority standards. See chart below for drug vs harm rankings:

Chart created by Professor David Nutt and obtained from Psychscenehub.com: https://psychscenehub.com/video/post-mcda-analysis-drug-related-harms-prof-david-nutt/

Who should not take psilocybin?

Clients with a history of psychosis, certain heart conditions, or contraindicated medications may not be eligible. Eligibility is determined through our consultation process.

What kind of screening do you conduct before a session?

We conduct a thorough health intake and mental wellness screening to ensure safety and alignment, based on clinical research and regulated by the Oregon Health Authority.

What safety protocols are in place during a session?

During your guided experience, trained, licensed facilitators will be present, who are informed on the latest and most up-to-date standards for psychedelic care. The facility is built to offer both emotional and physical comfort.

What happens if I have a difficult experience?

Our facilitators are trained in trauma-informed care and de-escalation. You will never be left alone. It is often said in a supported psychedelic session that difficult experiences can lead to the most transformative outcomes.

The Journey: What to Expect

What does a typical psilocybin journey look like?

It begins with screening and consultation, and is followed by preparation, an in-person session at our center, and concludes with guided integration.

How long does a session last?

The amount of psilocybin consumed will determine the length of time you will be at the center. Typically, sessions are between 4-6 hours. Actual durations will vary based on individual factors and experience.

Will I be alone during the experience?

No. A licensed facilitator will be present and attentive throughout.

Is This Therapy?

No. Psilocybin sessions tend to be most productive in conjunction with therapy, but the session itself is designed for inward focus and self-discovery. Your facilitator will help with intention-setting and ensuring optimal conditions for self-exploration, including: manage safety, attuning to your physical and emotional needs, and creating a nurturing and supportive environment. Facilitator-therapist coordination before and after a psilocybin session can also be extremely beneficial.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, and no. We offer partner or couples sessions by request. For individual journeys only the facilitator and certain support people (those who assist with language, mobility, etc) are allowed in the room during the session.

What should I bring or wear to my session?

We recommend comfortable clothing, a refillable water bottle, light snacks, and a personal/touchstone item (agreed upon by your facilitator). We provide blankets, eye masks, and other comfort items.

What happens after the session?

You will need someone to provide transportation, or one of the Unstuck staff members will take you home or to your hotel (if in Corvallis). After a few days you’ll meet with your facilitator either online or in person to discuss the experience and plan integration.

How much should I take?

During intake, you facilitator will help guide you on best dosages for you. Psilocybin dosage recommendations can vary based on a variety of factors such as:

  • Set: This refers to an individual’s mind”set”, and includes various mental factors which can shape the outcome of an experience. Preparation and expectations are important to consider prior to a psilocybin journey, and your faclitator will provide resources and techniques to increase the likelihood of a positive experience.
  • Interactions with Antidepressants: Tryptamines such psilocybin present low risk of serotonin toxicity when taken in tandem with SSRIs or alone. However, research indicates that SSRIs and SNRIs may weaken the effects of psilocybin.
  • Diet & Nutrition: Taking psilocybin on an empty stomach will speed up absorption and on-set time, and possibly increase the trip’s intensity. Additionally, a poor diet can have an impact on your current serotonin levels. Ask your facilitator for more information.
  • Individual Differences: People can have vastly different sensitivities and tolerances to psilocybin. Certain medications and conditions can vary the intensity for each individual as well. This is why the general rule of thumb is to start low dose and then increase it gradually.
  • Setting: The environment in which one consumes the mushrooms can profoundly influence the journey. Unstuck provides a safe, comfortable, and low-stimulation environment for optimal client experiences.
  • Context: Your facilitator can assist with determining an appropriate dosage for each individual based on a variety of factors such as: previous psychedelic experiences, comfort with psychedelics, reason for the experience, intention, etc.

Dosages by milligrams of psilocybin analyte (the psychoactive compound in mushrooms):

  1. Low Dose: 10 – 25 mg
  2. Moderate Dose: 25– 35 mg
  3. High Dose: 35 – 45 mg
  4. Very High Dose: 45-50 mg
Will my experience be different based on dose?

Yes. Here are general experiences based on consumer reports with each level (these are guidelines and will vary with each individual):

Low Dose (10-25mg)
There is a mild effect and neural pathway changes with some visual enhancement (i.e. brighter colours, clearer sounds, etc.) and possible auditory and visual blending.

Low-Moderate Dose (25-30mg)
Bright colors and visuals (objects may move /”breathe”). Patterns become apparent. Vast increase in creativity as neural networks are being changed in the brain.

High-Moderate Dose (30-35mg)
Overt visuals- curved, warped, and/or kaleidoscope patterns seen on walls, faces etc. Some mild hallucinations. Closed eye hallucinations become 3-dimensional. Possible confusion of the senses (i.e. seeing sounds as colors, etc.). Time distortions and “moments of eternity” may occur.

High Dose (35-45mg)
Strong hallucinations, i.e. objects morphing into other objects. Destruction or multiple splitting of the ego. (Auditory or visual hallucinations, or you find that you are feeling contradictory things simultaneously). Some loss of reality. Time can become meaningless. Out of body experiences and blending of the senses.

Very High Dose (45-50mg)
Loss of visual connection with reality. The senses may not seem to function in the normal way. Total loss of ego (or “ego death”). Merging of self with space, other objects, or the universe. The actual universe within which things are normally perceived may become altered. Experiences of parallel universes/dimensions may occur. Mystical or spiritual experiences are often reported.

After my session, how long do I have to wait at the service center before I can leave?

It depends on the dose consumed. Here is a table of minimum times for sessions at given doses.

DoseMinimum Session Time
2.5mg to < 5mg1 Hour
5mg to < 10mg2 Hours
10mg to < 15mg3 Hours
15mg to < 25mg4 Hours
25mg to < 35mg5 Hours
35mg to 50mg6 Hours
